Story Game Jam

On our first day back to college we were given a task to find a story whether it was a film, book or fairy tale. After we were put in our groups we got together to mind map all of our ideas that we could come up when thinking about a perfect story for our game.

The Story we decided to use for our game jam was the film Hot Fuzz but we will change it up a bit. We chose this story as it is a very big film as it is considered one of the best Cop films and action/comedy films to date, this would allow us to attract a large player base due to the large fan base of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Police films.

Story

The story of our game will be set as a prequel before the events seen in the film, you will play as the previous police Sergeant of Sanford, Sergeant Popwell, and you will be tasked with uncovering the dark events that have been popping up in town, before being hunted down and killed all in the name of the greater good.

The game will contain specific genres and characteristics found within the original source material:

  • Comedy.
  • Action.
  • Mystery/Crime Solving.
  • Horror aspects when talking about the Neighbor Hood Watch.
  • Dark undertones, but delivered very light and with comedy elements.

Game-play and the Console.

Our game will be sold mainly for PC and the current generation of consoles, Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. It will be a 3D game based in the Third-Person perspective, with game play and controls similar to that of L.A Noire, another Police/Detective video game set out like an old Movie set during Post-War Hollywood 1950’s. The game will feature dialogue trees similar to popular RPGs such as Fallout and the Elder Scrolls series.

Plot Changes and Twists.

The plot will have to be changed as the films pacing would not fit a game setting as the film often changes pacing from a slow pace to a faster pace when needed, and it does to good effect, however this does not work for a game as it often gives a game a rushed feeling when it comes to the faster paced plot.

Paper/3D Prototype.

After coming up with the game concept we created a 3D prototype using Lego pieces and and Clay. We created various parts of the film as little mock-ups of how we wanted them to look like, we made the model village, the Pub, Police Station and the caravan park, the caravan park was a basic set up for a level layout with hidden clues and people to talk to, allowing the player to gain information about the crime.
